K\u00f6nigsspitze – Hochjochgrat – Ortler<\/h3>\n

It is mid-January and instead of copious amounts of the finest powder snow, there is only some snow above 2000m. A long period of high pressure and low winds is expected. The avalanche situation is rather relaxed. Actually the ideal weather conditions for a cool spring ski tour, or so thought our team pilots Daniel Oberauer and Markus Anders, and 2 of their buddies Philip and Heli.<\/h6>\n

From the viewpoint of Markus:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The plan is forged quickly: climb the K\u00f6nigsspitze (Gran Zebr\u00f9) via the eastern ravine. A weak south-westerly wind is forecast – ideal for launching from the summit with our mini-wings TONIC2<\/a> and TONKA2<\/a> and then flying west around the K\u00f6nigsspitze to the Hochjoch bivouac. Spend the night there, then continue the crossing over the Hochjoch ridge to the Ortler the next day.<\/p>\n

We quickly pack everything and are on our way to Sulden in the camper. At 7 o’clock in the morning after a few hours of sleep we\u2019re ready to go. The first step is a climb of 2000m, 1000m of which are in the 40-45\u00b0 steep eastern ravine. Despite a rather mild winter, the South Tyrolean mountains offer a gigantic backdrop for the ascent.<\/p>\n

The conditions in the ravine are rather poor – in parts very icy, then hip-deep snow. After 5 hours of hard work we are standing at 3800m with a fantastic view. After a small summit snack we descend 100m for a more relaxed launch with our TONIC’s and TONKA’s<\/p>\n

The summit launch site is a bit risky and demanding for launching on skis. But we also consider the fact that we might not make it over the ridge right in front of the summit. If we don\u2019t, the price will be a long second climb.<\/p>\n

The westerly wind allows to fly a line along the western wall of Gran Zebr\u00f9 and Monte Zebr\u00f9. We land about 400m below the Hochjoch bivouac at 3100m on a glacier plateau. The atmosphere is great \u2013 it\u2019s late afternoon, the sun is low and the snow is soft. Just in time for sunset we reach the bivouac at over 3500m – breathtaking!<\/p>\n

After a substantial meal, we quickly crawl under the sheets because our sports watch shows a temperature of -5\u00b0 in the bivouac. Plus, the technical part of our tour is scheduled for tomorrow. The southern route to the Ortler is rarely used, even in summer.<\/p>\n

Just in time for sunrise we are on our feet. Our socks are damp and our ski boots have become \u201cfridge\u201d boots, so we don’t waste any time before setting off to warm up again. I wonder how many other people in the world have such a privilege to experience such moments. The route quickly becomes \u201ctechnical\u201d, so absolute surefootedness and concentration are required – falling from this ridge would be fatal.<\/p>\n

We manage to climb only 200 vertical meters in 3 hours before arriving at a long sloping plate about 50m below the Ortler summit. However, the safety hooks are all too snowy and digging them out is like searching for a needle in a haystack. We try another way to secure ourselves, but we don’t find anything good.<\/p>\n

After long back and forth comes the disillusionment. The final meters to the summit are too risky \u2013 so we turn around…<\/p>\n

Well, until now it was a great tour and the mountains aren\u2019t going anywhere soon. After another 2 hours we are back at the bivouac, getting our paragliders ready to launch and fly back to Sulden. I am really happy to have my glider with me. Within minutes we leave the rough and cold environment at over 3000m and find ourselves standing down at the parking lot in the sun, chatting about our brilliant tour.<\/p>\n

K\u00f6nigsspitze - Hochjochgrat - Ortler<\/h3>
Es ist Mitte Januar statt feinstem Pulverschnee in rauen Mengen findet man nur oberhalb 2000m etwas Schnee. Eine l\u00e4ngere schwachwindige Hochdruckperiode k\u00fcndigt sich an. Die Lawinensituation ist eher entspannt. Eigentlich die ideale Wetterlage um eine coole Fr\u00fchjahrsskihochtour zu machen, dachten sich \u2013 unsere Teampiloten Daniel Oberauer und Markus Anders, sowie 2 deren Kumpels Philip und Heli.<\/h6>

Aus Sicht von Markus:<\/strong><\/p>

Der Plan ist recht schnell geschmiedet. Die K\u00f6nigsspitze o.a. Gran Zebru \u00fcber die Ostrinne zu besteigen. Prognostiziert ist ein schwacher s\u00fcdwestlicher Wind \u2013 ideal um vom Gipfel mit unseren Miniwings TONIC2<\/a> und TONKA2<\/a> zu starten und dann westlich um die K\u00f6nigsspitze bis zum Hochjochbiwak zu fliegen. Dort die Nacht verbringen um am n\u00e4chsten Tag die \u00dcberschreitung \u00fcber den Hochjochgrat auf den Ortler fortzusetzen.<\/p>

Schnell haben wir alles gepackt und sind mit dem Summermobil unterwegs ab nach Sulden. Um 7 Uhr in der Fr\u00fch geht es nach ein paar wenigen Stunden Schlaf dann z\u00fcgig los. Im ersten Schritt sind 2000hm Anstieg zu bew\u00e4ltigen, davon 1000hm in der 40-45\u00b0 steilen Ostrinne. Trotz eher mauem Winter bieten die S\u00fcdtiroler Berge eine gigantische Kulisse beim Aufstieg.<\/p>

Die Bedingungen in der Rinne sind eher schlecht als recht - stellenweise sehr eisig, dann wieder h\u00fcfttiefer Schnee. Nach recht m\u00fchsamen 5h stehen wir dann auf \u00fcber 3800m bei gigantischem Ausblick. Nach einer kleinen Gipfeljause steigen wir 100hm ab, um eine entspanntere Startm\u00f6glichkeit mit unseren Tonics\/Toncas zu haben.<\/p>

Der Gipfelstartplatz ist dann doch etwas riskant und anspruchsvoll f\u00fcr einen Start mit den Skiern. Dabei nehmen wir allerdings in Kauf, dass wir es vielleicht gerade so nicht \u00fcber einen vorgelagerten Grat schaffen w\u00fcrden. Dies h\u00e4tte einen sehr langen zweiten Anstieg zur Folge.<\/p>

Doch der westliche Wind erm\u00f6glicht es eine tragende Linie entlang der Westwand von Gran Zebru und Monte Zebru zu fliegen. Wir landen etwa 400hm unterhalb des Hochjochbiwaks auf 3100m auf einem Gletscherplateau. Die Stimmung ist genial \u2013 sp\u00e4ter Nachmittag, die Sonne steht tief, der Schnee ist weich. Gerade rechtzeitig zum Sonnenuntergang erreichen wir das Biwak auf \u00fcber 3500m \u2013 atemberaubend!<\/p>

Nach einer Weile und einer ausgiebigen St\u00e4rkung verkriechen wir uns recht schnell unter die Bettlacken, denn im Biwak selbst zeigt unsere Trainingsuhr -5\u00b0 Umgebungstemperatur an. Zudem steht morgen der technische Teil unserer Tour an. Die S\u00fcdroute auf den Ortler ist selbst im Sommer eher selten begangen.<\/p>

P\u00fcnktlich zum Sonnenaufgang sind wir auf den Beinen. Die Socken sind Feucht, die Skischuh eher Gefrierschuhe \u2013 wir vergeuden daher keine Zeit und machen uns auf, um wieder warm zu werden. Dabei denke ich, wie viele andere Menschen auf der Welt denn auch so ein Privileg haben, um solche Momente erleben zu d\u00fcrfen. Schnell wird es technisch. Absolute Trittsicherheit und Konzentration sind gefragt \u2013 St\u00fcrzen w\u00e4re am Grat fatal.<\/p>

Wir schaffen 200hm in 3h und dann etwas 50m vom Ortlergipfel entfernt ist eine lange absch\u00fcssige Platte vor uns. Allerdings sind die Sicherungshaken alle zu geschneit und ein ausgraben gleicht der Suche nach der Nadel in einem Heuhaufen. Wir versuchen eine andere M\u00f6glichkeiten uns abzusichern zu errichten \u2013 finden aber nichts Gescheites.<\/p>

Nach langen hin und her kommt die Ern\u00fcchterung.<\/p>

Die letzten Meter zu Gipfel sind zu riskant \u2013 wir drehen um\u2026<\/p>

Naja bis dahin war es eine geniale Tour und die Berge stehen ja noch eine ganze Weile. Nach weiteren 2h sind wir zur\u00fcck am Biwak, machen unsere Gleitschirme startbereit und fliegen zur\u00fcck nach Sulden. Ich bin Gottfroh den Schirm dabei zu haben. Innerhalb weniger Minuten verlassen wir die raue und kalte Umgebung auf \u00fcber 3000m und finden uns am Parkplatz in der Sonne wieder und plaudern \u00fcber die doch sehr geniale Tour.<\/p>
