One<\/span> and a half <\/span>years<\/span> of <\/span>planning<\/span>, <\/span>two<\/span> weeks<\/span> in the <\/span>field<\/span>, and a <\/span>shot<\/span> that<\/span> only<\/span> existed<\/span> for a <\/span>few<\/span> seconds<\/span> \u2013 <\/span>this<\/span> is<\/span> the <\/span>story<\/span> of a small <\/span>team<\/span> who <\/span>tried<\/span> to <\/span>fly<\/span> a <\/span>paraglider<\/span> straight<\/span> through<\/span> a <\/span>total solar<\/span> eclipse<\/span> in <\/span>secluded<\/span> East Greenland.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

About a <\/span>year<\/span> and a half <\/span>ago<\/span>, Niccol\u00f2 Segreto <\/span>called<\/span> photographer<\/span> Norris Niman<\/a> <\/strong>to <\/span>invite<\/span> him<\/span> back to <\/span>secluded<\/span> East Greenland. Niccol\u00f2, who <\/span>owns<\/span> and <\/span>runs<\/span> Nunatak Adventures<\/a><\/strong>, the <\/span>Kulusuk-based<\/span> glacier and <\/span>mountain<\/span> guiding<\/span> company<\/span>, <\/span>wasn’t<\/span> just after <\/span>another<\/span> documentation<\/span> of <\/span>that<\/span> magical<\/span>, <\/span>insanely<\/span> epic<\/span> landscape<\/span> \u2013 <\/span>this<\/span> time he <\/span>wanted<\/span> to <\/span>try<\/span> to <\/span>capture<\/span> the <\/span>eclipse<\/span> with<\/span> a <\/span>group<\/span> of <\/span>pilots<\/span> who <\/span>were<\/span> going<\/span> to <\/span>fly<\/span> through <\/span>it<\/span>. Norris <\/span>had<\/span> spent<\/span> the last <\/span>ten<\/span> years<\/span> photographing<\/span> ice<\/span> and <\/span>fire<\/span> and <\/span>everything<\/span> in <\/span>between<\/span>, but <\/span>never<\/span> a <\/span>shot<\/span> that<\/span> only<\/span> lasts<\/span> a <\/span>tiny<\/span> fraction<\/span> of a second, <\/span>where<\/span> everything<\/span> has<\/span> to <\/span>perfectly<\/span> align<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>late<\/span> July<\/span> the <\/span>team<\/span> set<\/span> out for a <\/span>two-week<\/span> expedition<\/span> building<\/span> up<\/span> to the <\/span>eclipse<\/span>. Heading out <\/span>from<\/span> their<\/span> base<\/span> in <\/span>Kulusuk<\/span>, the <\/span>group<\/span> of nine included Niccol\u00f2 <\/span>guiding<\/span>, Norris on <\/span>photo<\/span> and <\/span>video<\/span> for a <\/span>documentary<\/span>, <\/span>two<\/span> more<\/span> crew<\/span> for <\/span>safety<\/span> and <\/span>logistics<\/span>, and five <\/span>pilots<\/span>. <\/span>They<\/span> had<\/span> two<\/span> spots<\/span> in <\/span>mind<\/span>, <\/span>both<\/span> enclosed<\/span> in <\/span>fjords<\/span> beneath<\/span> towering<\/span> mountains<\/span>, <\/span>with<\/span> tight<\/span> take-off<\/span> spots<\/span> and a <\/span>few<\/span> carefully<\/span> planned <\/span>landing <\/span>zones<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting <\/span>acclimatized<\/span> to the <\/span>rocky<\/span> Greenlandic<\/span> terrain<\/span> while<\/span> practicing<\/span> the <\/span>dance<\/span> of <\/span>documenting<\/span> flights<\/span> from<\/span> land<\/span> and <\/span>sky<\/span>, the <\/span>team<\/span> scouted<\/span> every<\/span> slope<\/span>, <\/span>hill<\/span>, <\/span>mountain<\/span> and angle <\/span>they<\/span> could<\/span> find. Pretty <\/span>early<\/span> on it <\/span>became<\/span> obvious<\/span> it <\/span>wouldn’t<\/span> work<\/span> as planned. With the <\/span>sky<\/span> itself<\/span> a massive <\/span>unknown<\/span>, <\/span>shooting<\/span> a <\/span>paraglider<\/span> with<\/span> the <\/span>eclipse<\/span> behind<\/span> it <\/span>would<\/span> mean<\/span> lining<\/span> it <\/span>up<\/span> with<\/span> a <\/span>mountain<\/span> ridge<\/span> right<\/span> at <\/span>take-off<\/span>. But the angle of the <\/span>sun<\/span> at <\/span>eclipse<\/span> time was <\/span>way<\/span> too<\/span> high for <\/span>that<\/span>. <\/span>No<\/span> cliff<\/span>, <\/span>no<\/span> ridge<\/span> was <\/span>steep<\/span> enough<\/span> to frame it. A <\/span>shot<\/span> too<\/span> impossible to <\/span>even<\/span> try<\/span> to <\/span>compose<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So the <\/span>day<\/span> before<\/span> the <\/span>eclipse<\/span>, <\/span>they<\/span> hatched<\/span> an <\/span>uncalculated<\/span>, <\/span>unrehearsed<\/span> plan: <\/span>have<\/span> the <\/span>pilots<\/span> fly<\/span> straight<\/span> out <\/span>into<\/span> the <\/span>fjord<\/span>, <\/span>with<\/span> Norris <\/span>right<\/span> below<\/span> them<\/span> aiming<\/span> up<\/span> at the <\/span>sun<\/span>, <\/span>trying<\/span> to <\/span>line<\/span> it <\/span>up<\/span> as <\/span>they<\/span> flew<\/span> through<\/span> it. A plan <\/span>doomed<\/span> to fail, <\/span>really<\/span> \u2013 a <\/span>one<\/span>-in-a-million <\/span>shot<\/span> at <\/span>hitting<\/span> an invisible <\/span>mark<\/span> somewhere<\/span> up<\/span> in the <\/span>sky<\/span>. Line <\/span>up<\/span> with<\/span> the <\/span>sun<\/span>, <\/span>full<\/span> focus<\/span>, <\/span>empty<\/span> the <\/span>mind<\/span>, hold <\/span>your<\/span> breath<\/span>, <\/span>fly<\/span> as <\/span>straight<\/span> as <\/span>you<\/span> can<\/span>. Not <\/span>even<\/span> the <\/span>lightest<\/span> fjord<\/span> wind was <\/span>allowed<\/span> to <\/span>touch<\/span> them<\/span>. <\/span>What<\/span> made<\/span> the plan <\/span>even<\/span> attemptable<\/span> in the <\/span>first<\/span> place<\/span> was the <\/span>PACE <\/span><\/a><\/strong>strapped<\/span> to <\/span>every<\/span> pilot’s<\/span> back \u2013 light and <\/span>packable<\/span> enough<\/span> to carry <\/span>up <\/span>every<\/span> scouted<\/span> slope<\/span>, and agile <\/span>enough<\/span> to hold a <\/span>razor-straight<\/span> line<\/span> under<\/span> pressure<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>sky<\/span> started<\/span> darkening<\/span>, <\/span>hands<\/span> colder<\/span> than<\/span> the <\/span>other<\/span> days<\/span>. Through <\/span>darkened<\/span> goggles<\/span>, the <\/span>eclipse<\/span> had<\/span> begun<\/span>, and the <\/span>tension<\/span> kept<\/span> growing<\/span>. The <\/span>team<\/span> still <\/span>had<\/span> an <\/span>hour<\/span> to <\/span>wait<\/span> to <\/span>be<\/span> as <\/span>close<\/span> to <\/span>totality<\/span> as possible \u2013 <\/span>too<\/span> many<\/span> unknowns<\/span> to <\/span>trust<\/span> the <\/span>alignment<\/span> yet<\/span>. The <\/span>take-off<\/span> was a <\/span>rocky<\/span> patch<\/span> of <\/span>lichen<\/span>, sharp <\/span>edges<\/span> and <\/span>little<\/span> twigs<\/span> ready<\/span> to grab <\/span>anyone’s<\/span> lines<\/span>, and on top of <\/span>that<\/span>, the <\/span>first<\/span> clouds<\/span> they’d<\/span> seen<\/span> in <\/span>fourteen<\/span> days<\/span> rolled<\/span> in. Worst possible <\/span>timing<\/span>. The <\/span>eclipse<\/span> grew<\/span> more<\/span> obscured<\/span> by the <\/span>minute. I<\/span>n a <\/span>few<\/span> test<\/span> shots<\/span> it <\/span>disappeared<\/span> from<\/span> the <\/span>camera<\/span> completely<\/span>. As Niccol\u00f2 <\/span>gave<\/span> the <\/span>command<\/span> that<\/span> the <\/span>pilots<\/span> are\u00a0<\/span>ready<\/span>, Norris <\/span>called<\/span> out to <\/span>wait<\/span> ten<\/span> more<\/span> minutes<\/span>. <\/span>They<\/span> might<\/span> miss the <\/span>peak<\/span>, but <\/span>visibility<\/span> couldn’t<\/span> get<\/span> much<\/span> worse<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And <\/span>then<\/span>, <\/span>almost<\/span> on <\/span>command<\/span>, the <\/span>sun<\/span> and <\/span>moon<\/span> came<\/span> back <\/span>into<\/span> view<\/span>. Just <\/span>enough<\/span> to <\/span>see<\/span> through<\/span> the <\/span>clouds<\/span>. Time for the last <\/span>shot<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A <\/span>few<\/span> failed<\/span> launches<\/span>, and <\/span>then<\/span> the <\/span>pilots<\/span> went<\/span> one<\/span> by <\/span>one<\/span>, a <\/span>few<\/span> minutes<\/span> apart \u2013 not <\/span>close<\/span> enough<\/span> to follow <\/span>each<\/span> other’s<\/span> line<\/span> as planned, but <\/span>close<\/span> enough<\/span> for the <\/span>eclipse<\/span> to <\/span>keep<\/span> clearing<\/span> up<\/span>. As <\/span>they<\/span> flew<\/span> over <\/span>Norris, he was <\/span>shouting<\/span> into<\/span> the <\/span>radios<\/span>, <\/span>loud<\/span> enough<\/span> to carry <\/span>into<\/span> the <\/span>sky<\/span>: « R<\/span>ight<\/span>, <\/span>right<\/span>, RIGHT, <\/span>now<\/span> left<\/span>, LEFT! » Two of the <\/span>first<\/span> four<\/span> partially<\/span> crossed<\/span> the frame, not <\/span>close<\/span> enough<\/span> to catch the <\/span>eclipse<\/span>. The <\/span>others <\/span>missed<\/span> entirely<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last of <\/span>them<\/span> all, Niccol\u00f2 was <\/span>struggling<\/span> to launch. Lines <\/span>caught<\/span>. He <\/span>stumbled<\/span>. <\/span>Waited<\/span> a <\/span>moment<\/span>, <\/span>watching<\/span> his<\/span> friends<\/span> glide<\/span> off <\/span>into<\/span> the <\/span>distance<\/span>. <\/span>Decided<\/span> to <\/span>try<\/span> again. T<\/span>he PACE <\/span>lying<\/span> in a <\/span>cluster<\/span> between<\/span> the <\/span>rocks<\/span>. <\/span>Pulled<\/span> it <\/span>free<\/span>. Face down. Ran. <\/span>One<\/span> of the <\/span>reasons<\/span> the PACE was <\/span>chosen<\/span> for <\/span>this<\/span> trip<\/span> in the <\/span>first<\/span> place<\/span>: a clean, fast, <\/span>forgiving<\/span> relaunch <\/span>even<\/span> off a <\/span>rocky<\/span>, wind-<\/span>tossed<\/span> patch<\/span> of <\/span>lichen<\/span>. Full <\/span>inflation<\/span>, and off <\/span>after<\/span> the <\/span>others<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He<\/span> caught<\/span> up<\/span> with<\/span> Pacifica, <\/span>flying<\/span> just <\/span>ahead<\/span> of <\/span>him<\/span> \u2013 <\/span>with<\/span> her as a <\/span>reference<\/span> in the<\/span> otherwise<\/span> empty<\/span> sky<\/span>, he <\/span>could<\/span> fully <\/span>focus<\/span> on <\/span>lining<\/span> up<\/span> the <\/span>shot<\/span>. As <\/span>they<\/span> flew<\/span> over<\/span> Norris, he <\/span>saw<\/span> it: the <\/span>alignment<\/span> nobody <\/span>had<\/span> even<\/span> dared<\/span> wish<\/span> for. Pacifica <\/span>came<\/span> in just <\/span>right<\/span> of the <\/span>sun<\/span>, Niccol\u00f2 <\/span>correcting<\/span> his<\/span> course<\/span> to match. Just as Norris <\/span>looked<\/span> up<\/span> to <\/span>shout<\/span> « Hold <\/span>that<\/span> course!<\/span> » <\/span>his<\/span>\u00a0tripod<\/span> gave<\/span> way<\/span> and the <\/span>camera<\/span> dropped<\/span> toward<\/span> the <\/span>ground<\/span>. <\/span>He<\/span> caught<\/span> it just <\/span>before<\/span> it <\/span>hit<\/span> the <\/span>rocks<\/span>, <\/span>switched<\/span> to hand-held <\/span>run<\/span>-and-<\/span>gun<\/span> in <\/span>seconds<\/span>, <\/span>looked<\/span> through<\/span> the <\/span>viewfinder. A<\/span>s Niccol\u00f2 <\/span>flew<\/span> right<\/span> through<\/span> the <\/span>eclipse<\/span>, he <\/span>fired <\/span>away<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The top shot was captured!<\/p>\n

It <\/span>worked<\/span>. <\/span>One<\/span> and a half <\/span>years<\/span> of <\/span>planning<\/span>, <\/span>where<\/span> nothing<\/span> in the end <\/span>went<\/span> as planned. The <\/span>team<\/span> still <\/span>nailed<\/span> it. On the last <\/span>try<\/span>. On the last <\/span>day<\/span>. Through the <\/span>chaos<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The plan <\/span>had<\/span> been<\/span> to <\/span>make<\/span> a <\/span>documentary<\/span> about<\/span> capturing<\/span> the <\/span>perfect<\/span> shot<\/span>. Something <\/span>career-defining<\/span>, a <\/span>clear<\/span> before<\/span> and after. <\/span>What<\/span> became<\/span> clear<\/span> along<\/span> the <\/span>way<\/span>, <\/span>though<\/span>, <\/span>is<\/span> that<\/span> this<\/span> was <\/span>never<\/span> really<\/span> a <\/span>story <\/span>about<\/span> the <\/span>eclipse<\/span>, <\/span>or<\/span> even<\/span> about<\/span> paragliding<\/span>. <\/span>It’s<\/span> a <\/span>story<\/span> about<\/span> the <\/span>people<\/span> who <\/span>set<\/span> out <\/span>together<\/span> to <\/span>experience<\/span> it. About <\/span>why<\/span> people<\/span> chase<\/span> experiences<\/span> that<\/span> humble<\/span> them<\/span>, <\/span>even<\/span> when<\/span> they<\/span> only<\/span> last a <\/span>few<\/span> minutes.<\/span> And <\/span>maybe<\/span> it’s<\/span> not <\/span>about<\/span> the <\/span>big<\/span> moment<\/span> at all, but <\/span>about<\/span> the <\/span>journey<\/span> that<\/span> brings<\/span> people<\/span> together<\/span> while<\/span> chasing<\/span> it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Watching<\/span> a <\/span>total solar<\/span> eclipse<\/span> this<\/span> far<\/span> from<\/span> everyone<\/span> and <\/span>everything<\/span> was <\/span>humbling<\/span> in <\/span>itself<\/span>. But <\/span>looking<\/span> up<\/span> at the same <\/span>sun<\/span> and <\/span>moon<\/span> as so <\/span>many<\/span> other<\/span> people<\/span> on<\/span>\u00a0the <\/span>world<\/span>, at the same <\/span>moment<\/span> \u2013 as <\/span>cheesy<\/span>as it <\/span>sounds<\/span>, it <\/span>felt<\/span> like a <\/span>connection<\/span> between<\/span> everyone<\/span> who was <\/span>there<\/span> and <\/span>everyone<\/span> who <\/span>wasn’t<\/span>. <\/span>One<\/span> massive, <\/span>otherworldly<\/span> moment<\/span>, on <\/span>this<\/span> tiny<\/span> grain<\/span> of <\/span>sand<\/span> we<\/span> all<\/span> share<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
