An impressive 300 kilometer flight with the EN-A MESCAL6

Amir Ghasemnejad has achieved an outstanding flight. Flying over 300 kilometers is already a great achievement. But to cover this distance with an EN-A paraglider is absolutely phenomenal! We are particularly pleased that he mastered this flight with our MESCAL6. It not only proves the excellent performance of the MESCAL, but also that you don’t need a high performance glider to go on a cross-country flight. With an EN-A wing, you can fly long distances safely and comfortably.

The flight instructor and competition pilot usually flies competition paragliders and has already flown many 400 kilometer flights and achieved several podium places with them. But this time he wanted to take on a new challenge and prove that you can also reach far destinations with an EN-A paraglider. He managed to stay in the air a whole hour longer than other pilots, making the most of the day and his distance right until the end. He may not have been the fastest at the end of the day, but he was the furthest.

« Hello, I am Amir Mohammad Ghasemnejad, instructor and xc competition pilot from Iran. Today I want to tell you the story of the 323 km flight with the EN-A skywalk MESCAL6.

Since I like adventure and doing new things without limits, and I have already won many podiums in competitions and I have the experience of flying +400 km, I decided to fly with EN-A wing this time. My goal for this work were 2 things:

  1. Adventure and more challenging myself.
  2. Changing the attitude and mindset of the pilots and showing the importance of the pilot’s ability to get performance from the equipment to reach the goals. You don’t necessarily have to use comp wings to get results.

In Iran, the conditions for cross-country flights are fantastic: Good wind speed in different layers, high cloud base, long days and strong thermals. »

Why did I choose the MESCAL6?

« Because it has a better performance compared to other EN A wings. Also, despite having the agility system, it gave me more enjoyable thermaling for a long time ahead. One of the advantages of MESCAL is its very good comfort in turbulence conditions, and you will no longer be afraid of collapse or anything else. In this way, I must say that the purpose of the EN-A wing design is other things and it is definitely not the best wing for race and records. »

Which challenges and limitations did I face in this flight?

« One of them is emergency landing in high wind. When you see the ground speed of 102 km/h on the device, you tell yourself that your place in the sky is safer than on the ground.

The next thing is the lower maximum speed of an EN-A class wing, which makes you fly less distance during the day. But I was able to maintain an average speed of 40.16 km/h with the EN-A in an 8 hour flight by using good lines and finding strong thermals and using the speed system correctly and at the right time.

Another of my challenges was the difference in behavior of thermaling with comp wings, which required spending more time to enter thermal and climbing. Of course, thanks to the high cloud base, I was able to climb up to the height of 5427 meters.

Also, managing thermal drift in 40 km/h winds with an EN-A is very difficult and requires high skill. In such a situation, get out of the thermal; it is almost impossible to get back.

And finally, after starting the flight from southwest Iran, I landed near the north of Iran.

I wish you all the best flights. »

The facts:
  • Flight date: 2nd July, 2024
